Poon Hill Muktinath Trek is an adventure exploration of lower Annapurna foothills and lower Mustang region combined. The adventure is a perfect mixture of nature, cultural and spiritual wonders. Tracing the trail through rhododendron forest up towards the alpine climate of Muktinath, the trek takes you through wonderful Kali Gandaki River valley. You enter the region from Modi River valley and finish it in Kali Gandaki River valley.
The trek also takes you to the deepest gorge in the world – Kali Gandaki River gorge. You will trek along the river valley that is famous for Shaligram – the stone fossils – and eventually reach Muktinath temple that is a famous and sacred spiritual site. People have huge faith on the temple and believe that visiting the temple with real faith and devotion brings you spiritual salvation – the Moksh or the Mukti. What do you see on the trek?
Day one of the trip is your arrival day in Kathmandu, Nepal. When you arrive at Kathmandu airport, We Trek Nepal representative will welcome you and transfer to hotel. It will take more or less 20 minutes to reach hotel depending upon traffic. We will let you know about our trip briefing schedule and other essentials on your arrival at the hotel. You stay relaxed and try to adjust with the new atmosphere as a traveller. We will talk about any questions you may have at our trip briefing meeting.
We are at the elevation of 1,400 meters from sea level and are going well above 5,000 meters on the trip. We will take this day as our acclimatization and preparation day before we head up towards the mountains. Instead of staying idle in hotel, we will take you for a wonderful day tour of Kathmandu valley. Exploring UNESCO’s cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu is the best way to know about historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of this 2 millennia old city. We will visit Swoyambhunath popularly known as the Monkey Temple that is oldest monument in Kathmandu valley, Kathmandu Durbar Square that is one of the medieval palace squares in Kathmandu valley, Boudhanath that is the largest Buddhist stupa and Pashupatinath that is a Hindu temple premises with open Hindu cremation platforms on the bank of River Bagmati. Once we are back to hotel in the afternoon, we will go for last minute gearing up for our trekking adventure.
We will drive to Pokhara, 200 km west of Kathmandu, today. Pokhara is the main gateway to the trekking in Annapurna region. The highway that leads us to Pokhara is full of beautiful villages, rivers, and surroundings. It will take us about six hours to reach Pokhara. This city provides beautiful view of the Annapurna range, peaceful atmosphere, and a stay by the lakeside. Once we reach Pokhara, we can go for a relaxing walk along the walking lane in the Lakeside.
It’s our first trekking day of the trip but the start of the walk is still about 1.5 hours from here. We drive to Nayapul after breakfast to start our Poon Hill walking adventure. After we get off of the vehicle and start walking towards the destination. When we reach Birethanti, we need to check in to the Annapurna Conservation Area check post before we trek further. Tikhedhunga, our destination for the day, is about 5 hours walk from Nayapul. We mostly walk on the motorable dirt road today to reach the destination. Tikhedhunga lies at the foothills right at the bottom of Ulleri village.
The second day of our trekking adventure takes us to Ghorepani - a beautiful village that lies about 1,000 meters above Tikhedhunga. The walk starts with a steep uphill trek to Ulleri village. About two hours of uphill struggle, we eventually arrive to Ulleri easing the trail ahead a bit. After a short break at this beautiful village, we continue walking further ahead through well terraced slopes and then through forest. We reach Ghorepani to find a beautiful welcome of the snow-capped mountains. On a clear day, the view from Ghorepani is simply spectacular. We settle into a teahouse and relax.
Today is one of the highlights of the trip. We will hike to Poon Hill really early in the morning, much earlier before the break of dawn. The mountain panorama and sunrise from the elevation of 3,210 meters above sea level at Poon Hill is magical. We will enjoy the mountain and sunrise view, weather permitting, before heading back to Ghorepani for breakfast. We, later, trek to Tatopani to stay overnight. It’s a beautiful nature trek to Tatopani.
We will trek to Ghasa village along the Kali Gandaki River valley. The trail that meanders through the river valley takes us past Dana and Kopchepani villages. An amazing waterfall called Ruptse Chhara comes along the way to Ghasa. The beauty of this waterfall that comes down from jagged cliff is simply astounding. We continue on the trek towards the ethnic Thakali settlement of Ghasa to stay overnight.
Our destination for the day is Marpha village. We continue the walk towards Marpha along the wonderful river valley. We will walk past beautiful villages of Lete and Tukuche before reaching the destination. Marpha village is one of the settlements where big apple orchards can be found. Apples from this village are really tasty and of high quality. We spend overnight here at Marpha.
We are still following the trail that goes along the river valley. We will trek to Kagbeni as our destination for the day today. We will follow the trail that goes through beautiful Jomsom where many trekkers fly in from Pokhara to go trekking in the region. We are flying out to Pokhara from this place. We continue on the trek further to Kagbeni on the bank of Kali Gandaki River.
We are going to reach Muktinath on our trek today. Finally, we are going to be at the final destination of this trip. We follow the trail up the hill towards Muktinath. We will walk amidst amazing surroundings of beautiful landscapes. Mountain views make our walk even more interesting. Once we reach Muktinath, we can explore the spiritual site of Muktinath temple and the surroundings. We stay overnight at Muktinath today.
After an amazing time exploring the spirituality, we will continue our trek to Jomsom via Kagbeni. This is the last day of trekking journey on the trip. After spending some incredible time and exploring the wonders along the trail in Himalayan foothills and Kali Gandaki River valley, we have come to the end of trekking part. We spend the night in Jomsom today.
We will fly to Pokhara today. The flight will go parallel past the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. This amazing flight lands in Pokhara in about 20 minutes. We will have the rest of the day at leisure in Pokhara. Spending some relaxing time after few days of trekking in the mountains can be revitalizing.
We drive back to Kathmandu today. Drive through the same highway we took earlier to go to Pokhara takes us back to the Nepalese capital city. Once we reach Kathmandu and check into hotel, we will have free time on our own. After several days in the quiet mountains, life in Kathmandu might feel a sudden change.
