We leave Kathmandu valley today to go to Jiri about 220 km east of Kathmandu. The drive introduces us to the Nepalese life outside Kathmandu valley. The winding road goes past several beautiful towns and brings some beautiful places to our sight. Jiri is the place where we are spending our overnight today. We will have some time to explore the Jiri bazar to know the life and culture of the place. This will be a nice introduction to a small town life style outside Kathmandu valley.
We embark on the first day of our trekking adventure. From today onwards we are on our feet now. It is time now to enjoy the rural wonders, nature, and culture of the places that we come across. Trekking to Bhandar will take us almost the whole day before we reach there. The first day of the trek is a long day to start with. But we will come across many wonderful places and villages to enjoy as we trek further to Bhandar for our overnight stay.
On the second day of our trekking adventure, we will trek from Bhandar to Sete. It is another beautiful day of cultural and natural exploration of the middle hills of Nepal. The day will be another long trekking day. The trail meanders down and up the hill giving us a little challenge to sustain the craggy trail on foot. Never mind the distance or duration as you trek. We have many wonderful things to keep our mind off the long distance and duration. We eventually reach Sete and settle into a guest house. If the weather permits, we can enjoy a beautiful sunset view from here.
It is going to be probably the toughest of the days in the middle hills as we are going to trek over Lamjura Pass (3,700m). We start trekking uphill early morning from Sete towards the pass it is a tiring effort to take uphill early morning. But the surroundings of the trail make us forget the effort but only enjoy the walk in the excitement of what next. Once we reach the pass and spend a few minutes there, we start descending a long way to Junbensi as our destination for the day. We settle in a guest house at Junbensi, a small and beautiful town nestled at the foothill.
Trekking to Nunthala from Junbensi today brings us beautiful views of the Himalayan range. We will have the first ever view of the Mt. Everest, the highest mountain on earth and the destination we are aiming to reach. We come to this view after walking about an hour uphill from Junbensi. We admire the view of the gorgeous mountains and the surroundings that we pass through. We eventually reach Nunthala after traversing the trail down and up and down again to settle in a guest house and relax and enjoy the cool atmosphere of the place.
We continue our trek to Khari Khola today. We have done so many uphill and downhill every that it has become quite obvious now that we will be doing the same for next two weeks. That is the beauty of trekking in the mountains although it’s quite tough idea. Tracing the trail up and down the hill, we proceed towards Khari Khola to stay overnight. It will be about 5 hours on the trail before we reach our destination for the day.
Puiyan is our destination for the day. We start the trek up and down the hill as usual towards Puiyan. The nature and surroundings and local villages that we come across are so beautiful to make our walk easier. We have covered so much of the middle hills that the things look much familiar even though we come across new place and surroundings. We reach Puiyan and check into a guest house to settle in.
We will trek to Phakding today. The Dudh Koshi River valley is in sight and we follow the trail towards it. As usual the beautiful nature is the day maker as it keeps us engaged despite the difficulty of walking. We reach Phakding village and settle in a guest house. We meet several trekkers who trek here from Lukla and also back from the higher elevation towards Lukla. The route ahead now will get more people trekking along the trail.
This is the day we enter the Sagarmatha National Park. We continue the trekking through Dudh Koshi valley and cross and re-cross the river over suspension bridges. The trek goes past beautiful settlements of Monjo and Jorsalle and heads up towards the destination. We will come across donkeys and yaks fetching goods up to the higher elevation. The final section of the walk today is a steady uphill to the peacefully perched Namche Bazar on the mountain slope. Namche Bazar is one of the beautiful hometowns to Sherpa people and is often considered as the Sherpa capital. This small and beautiful town is the most happening place of all in the Everest region with ATM, internet, pub, market, trekking gear shops, souvenir shops etc.
Acclimatization is highly recommended and important part of trekking in the high elevation. Namche Bazar is our first acclimatization point in the mountains. Its strategic location at the elevation of 3,440 meters above sea level is the good place to stay an extra day and adjust with the elevation before going higher. As part of our acclimatization, we take a hiking adventure to Khumjung village to explore the surroundings. Khumjung is another beautiful Sherpa village where we can explore local lifestyle amazements and monastic spirituality in addition to captivating views of the mountains. After enjoying a wonderful hike and exploration of Khumjung village, we return back to Namche Bazar for overnight stay.
We part from the Everest Base Camp Trek route today and head towards Gokyo valley. Our destination for the day is Phortse Thanga, a small village in the region where trekkers spend overnight. As we have parted and taken a different route from Everest Base Camp one, we will have fewer people trekking in the region. Fewer in comparison to the regular base camp trekking route. The walk from today onwards will much more peaceful than our first three days. We reach Phortse Thanga to settle into a teahouse and explore the surroundings.
We are continuing our peaceful yet adventurous trekking journey towards the Gokyo valley. We aim to spend our overnight at Machhermo today allowing us ample time to acclimatize before we head further higher up. After walking for about four hours, we reach Machhermo and settle into a tea house. We will have enough time to enjoy the surroundings of the place. We take a good rest today to trek to Gokyo tomorrow.
Our walk for the day takes us to the final destination of this trip, Gokyo valley. A well-paced walk will take us past an ancient cave, two beautiful lakes only to settle us on the shore of the third lake. The walk goes through peaceful uphill trail and passes beautiful landscapes and attractions before reaching the destination and settling on the shore of the lake for the night.
We will have an early morning start of the day to hike to Gokyo Ri, a spectacular view point that provides an overwhelming view of the Himalayan folds. The strenuous trekking effort will get the reward of the overwhelming view of the lakes, mountains and glaciers. We hike down to Gokyo later after spending a good time at Gokyo Ri. We take our day here at Gokyo Lakes to explore and soak into the magical charm of the lake. Spending time at this peaceful place is simply a heavenly experience.
We continue our trek today. After spending peaceful, adventurous and beautiful time at Gokyo Lakes, we trek to Thagnag today. It is a short day trek to the destination. The trail will bring us beautiful views to enjoy as we walk towards the destination. Once we reach Thagnag and settle into a guest house, we will have time to explore around.
We will be heading to the second high pass of our trip today. We will start early in the morning to walk towards Cho La pass to be at the elevation of 5,420 meters above sea level. This is slightly a difficult pass to cross over but nothing too technical. A little bit of careful movements along the trail leads us to the top of this amazing pass. The view of surroundings from the top is simply spectacular. Later, we trek down to Dzongla through a little tricky trail. Dzongla is a small settlement and a usual overnight spot for the trekkers. We stay our night here today.
We will trek to Lobuche today where we meet the regular Everest Base Camp trekking route and the trekkers heading to the base of world’s highest mountain. The trail is accompanied by spectacular surroundings throughout. The view of Lobuche peak looks beautiful and the landscapes around are equally fascinating.
Finally, the day to reach the Everest Base Camp is here today. With all the zeal and excitement, we continue on our trekking adventure towards the ultimate destination of the trek. We reach Gorakshep to settle into a teahouse and relish our lunch before heading to the Everest Base Camp also known as the EBC. A gradual ascent through boulder strewn trail eventually takes us to the base of the Mt. Everest. The joy of being at the foot of the highest mountain in the world is simply indescribable. We soak in the moment and enjoy the bliss. We take as many pictures as we want and enjoy and get lost in the joyful moment, amidst high soaring mountains, before we head back to Gorakshep to stay overnight.
This is another day of excitement as we will hike to the highest elevation of the trip. Early morning hike to Kalapatthar vantage point at the elevation of 5,545 meters above sea level takes us to the highest point on the trip. We will be closely right in front of the Himalayan panorama and Mt. Everest like we were never before. The breathtaking view will be even more arresting while the morning sun casts the hues upon those mighty mountains. We hike back to Gorakshep after enjoying the view, sunrise and the joyful moment at the vantage point. Later, we will start our return journey and trek to Pheriche to stay overnight.
This day on the return journey is one of the longest walking days when we trek to Namche Bazar to stay overnight. Even when we are walking back towards lower elevation, the surroundings look equally magical and thoroughly appealing. We still have so much to see and enjoy that that long day walk doesn’t even feel a bit. Once we reach Namche, we can take a relaxing wandering around the village.
We continue of the final day of trekking and head towards Lukla. Meandering mostly on the downhill trail, we follow the Dudh Koshi valley again to reach Lukla. We check out the amazing Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo and continue towards the destination. Once we reach Lukla and check into the guest house, we will have time to wander around and take a relaxing moment. A big walking adventure in the mountains has come to end today. Big thanks to the awesome team of porters and guide who tirelessly worked so hard to make sure that things are well taken care of.
We say goodbye to mountains today as we fly back to Kathmandu. A wonderfully peaceful adventure has come to end yet it has left a life lasting impression upon us. With the memory and love for mountains and people there, we fly back to Kathmandu where we will have time to find a soothing relaxing after trek massage or just chill around.
This additional day is to cover any possible delay or cancellation of the flight to Lukla and back which is a usual thing in this flight sector due to weather condition. If this contingency day is not used, it’s a free day in Kathmandu to do some activities or just spend a relaxing day.
