Khopra Trek goes to a quieter region of the Annapurna and reaches up to Khayar Lake above the Khopra ridge. Also known as Khopra Ridge Trek or Khopra Danda Trek, this is an extraordinarily peaceful adventure that explores somewhat unexplored region in the Annapurna. This adventure trekking is a great alternative to the famous and crowded trekking trips in the lower Annapurna region like Ghorepani Trek.
Trekking off the popular trekking trail in the Annapurna region, the adventure goes towards the viewpoint of Khopra Danda and up to Khayar Lake. The majestic peace and spectacular views in utterly serene nature make the trip truly wonderful. The adventure goes as high as 4,660 meters above sea level to Khayar Lake. You can experience walking in the lush forest to the High Himalayan pastures. Although you walk along the well-trodden Ghorepani Trekking trail for a few days, you leave the trail to more peaceful Khopra region.

We will take this day as our acclimatization and preparation day before we head up towards the mountains. Instead of staying idle in hotel, we will take you for a wonderful day tour of Kathmandu valley. Exploring UNESCO’s cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu is the best way to know about historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of this 2 millennia old city. We will visit Swoyambhunath popularly known as the Monkey Templethat is oldest monument in Kathmandu valley, Kathmandu Durbar Squarethat is one of the medieval palace squares in Kathmandu valley, Boudhanaththat is the largest Buddhist stupa and Pashupatinaththat is a Hindu temple premises with open Hindu cremation platforms on the bank of River Bagmati. Once we are back to hotel in the afternoon, we will go for last minute gearing up for our trekking adventure.
We will drive to Pokhara, 200 km west of Kathmandu, today. Pokhara is the main gateway to the trekking in Annapurna region. The highway that leads us to Pokhara is full of beautiful villages, rivers, and surroundings. It will take us about six hours to reach Pokhara. This city provides beautiful view of the Annapurna range, peaceful atmosphere, and a stay by the lakeside. Once we reach Pokhara, we can go for a relaxing walk along the walking lane in the Lakeside.
It’s our first trekking day of the trip but the start of the walk is still about 1.5 hours from here. We drive to Nayapul after breakfast to start our Poon Hill walking adventure. After we get off of the vehicle and start walking towards the destination. When we reach Birethanti, we need to check in to the Annapurna Conservation Area check post before we trek further. Tikhedhunga, our destination for the day, is about 5 hours walk from Nayapul. We mostly walk on the motorable dirt road today to reach the destination. Tikhedhunga lies at the foothills right at the bottom of Ulleri village.
The second day of our trekking adventure takes us to Ghorepani - a beautiful village that lies about 1,000 meters above Tikhedhunga. The walk starts with a steep uphill trek to Ulleri village. About two hours of uphill struggle, we eventually arrive to Ulleri easing the trail ahead a bit. After a short break at this beautiful village, we continue walking further ahead through well terraced slopes and then through forest. We reach Ghorepani to find a beautiful welcome of the snow-capped mountains. On a clear day, the view from Ghorepani is simply spectacular. We settle into a teahouse and relax.
Today is one of the highlights of the trip. We will hike to Poon Hill really early in the morning, much earlier before the break of dawn. The mountain panorama and sunrise from the elevation of 3,210 meters above sea level at Poon Hill is magical. We will enjoy the mountain and sunrise view, weather permitting, before heading back to Ghorepani for breakfast. We, later, trek to Dobato on the way to Khopra Danda to stay overnight. It’s a beautiful nature trek to Dobato. We trek past beautiful Mulde Hill (3,600m) along the trail.
We will continue our trek to Khopra Danda today. This place will be our highest overnight place on the trip. We trace the trail in the peaceful region with fewer people towards the destination. We will trek past Bayali Kharka and Chhistibung village before ascending to the top of Khopra Danda. The beautiful walk along the trail takes us to the destination for a spectacular view of the mountains in Dhaulagiri and Annapurna rage. The amazing stretch of Kali Gandaki River canyon is seen below. We spend overnight at this amazing viewpoint.
We are going to be at the highest elevation on the trip today when we reach Khayar Lake on our hike. We will walk through alpine grassy pastures up the mountains towards the destination. Khayar Lake is a beautiful place surrounded by mountains that makes it like a piece of heaven. This lake also has religious and spiritual importance amongst the people living in the Annapurna region. Later, we return back to Khopra Danda to spend overnight. About 8 hours of round trip has brought us so many memorable moments that count.
It is the last day of trekking on the trip. We are trekking to Tatopani today to stay overnight. About 5 hours of trekking will take us to Tatopani. Once we reach Tatopani, and if time allows, we will indulge in the luxury of rejuvenating natural hot spring bath. Tatopani literally translates as ‘hot water’ and the place has one of the several natural hot springs in Nepal. We spend a relaxing evening and night here.
We will drive back to Pokhara today. The drive takes us to Beni along the Kali Gandaki River valley and goes to Pokhara via the towns of Baglung, Kushma, and Nayapul. Once we reach Pokhara, we spend time at leisure wandering around Lakeside.
We drive back to Kathmandu today. Drive through the same highway we took earlier to go to Pokhara takes us back to the Nepalese capital city. Once we reach Kathmandu and check into hotel, we will have free time on our own. After several days in the quiet mountains, life in Kathmandu might feel a sudden change.
