We will take this day as our acclimatization and preparation day before we head up towards the mountains. Instead of staying idle in hotel, we will take you for a wonderful day tour of Kathmandu valley. Exploring UNESCO’s cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu is the best way to know about historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of this 2 millennia old city. We will visit Swoyambhunath popularly known as the Monkey Templethat is oldest monument in Kathmandu valley, Kathmandu Durbar Squarethat is one of the medieval palace squares in Kathmandu valley, Boudhanaththat is the largest Buddhist stupa and Pashupatinaththat is a Hindu temple premises with open Hindu cremation platforms on the bank of River Bagmati. It is going to be our first day in the mountains today. We drive to airport early in the morning for our flight to Tenzing Hilary airstrip in Lukla. This short and spectacularly adventurous flight takes us to breathe the rejuvenating air of the Everest region. Once we land at Lukla airport, we prepare to embark on the Island Peak Climbing adventure. Although it’s a big adventure in the mountains, we will go at ease and pace as we advance towards our next destination. Our walk to Phakding is of about 4 hours that takes us through beautiful surroundings of mountains, nature and cultural riches.
This is the day we enter the Sagarmatha National Park. We continue the trekking through Dudh Koshi valley and cross and re-cross the river over suspension bridges. The trek goes past beautiful settlements of Monjo and Jorsalle and heads up towards the destination. We will come across donkeys and yaks fetching goods up to the higher elevation. The final section of the walk today is a steady uphill to the peacefully perched Namche Bazar on the mountain slope. Namche Bazar is one of the beautiful hometowns to Sherpa people and is often considered as the Sherpa capital. This small and beautiful town is the most happening place of all in the Everest region with ATM, internet, pub, market, trekking gear shops, souvenir shops etc.
Acclimatization is highly recommended and important part of trekking in the high elevation. Namche Bazar is our first acclimatization point in the mountains. Its strategic location at the elevation of 3,440 meters above sea level is the good place to stay an extra day and adjust with the elevation before going higher. As part of our acclimatization, we take a hiking adventure to Khumjung village to explore the surroundings. Khumjung is another beautiful Sherpa village where we can explore local lifestyle amazements and monastic spirituality in addition to captivating views of the mountains. After enjoying a wonderful hike and exploration of Khumjung village, we return back to Namche Bazar for overnight stay.
We are ready now to meander through the trail to Tengboche today. It is one of the most scenic and spectacular walks of the trek. With a start on gentle and gradual ascent for a while, we start descending through rhododendron forest down to Dudh Koshi River bank only to find ourselves ascending steeply towards our destination for the day. The ascent goes through pine and rhododendron forested area to emerge into a ridgeline. Once we come to the top on the ridgeline, we follow grassy pasture to reach Tengboche for overnight stay. Tengboche village has a famous and beautiful Buddhist monastery where a huge faith and devotion of local Buddhist people can be seen. We will explore the monastery as we enjoy arresting views of the mountains that this beautiful place has to offer us.
The walk today involves meandering through up and down the mountain and brings wonderful surroundings to our sight. The trail meanders up and down the mountain through Deboche, Imja Khola, Pangboche and eventually to Dingboche. Traversing the trail through beautiful places and surroundings, we might make a brief stop at Pangboche village to explore the oldest monastery in the region. After Pangboche, it’s an uphill walk to Dingboche village that lies just below the spectacular Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812m). The view and the awesome surroundings make us forget all the tiredness of about six hours of trekking in the Himalaya.
Dingboche is the second and the last acclimatization point before adventuring further to Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar vantage point. While still spending an extra day here at Dingboche, we leave no chance to explore the surroundings. We will go for an awesome hike to Nagarjun hill, which is also a wonderful vantage point. A full day of exploration of the surroundings and spending an extra night at Dingboche well prepares us for our further trekking adventure to the base camp.
Lobuche stands ahead of us as our destination for the day. We have already trekked high enough to see grassy pastures, glacial moraines and high boulder strewn landscapes instead of green vegetation. Rocky and craggy trails with mountainous surroundings with no sign of modern day happenings, the atmosphere feels in the real wilderness. Yet, the feeling of being into such a peaceful and magnificent place on earth is difficult to explain. We tread the glacial moraine filled trail to Lobuche via Thukla to stay our overnight there. Lobuche is a small settlement where the route via Gokyo Lakes and Cho La pass also meets to go to the Everest Base Camp.
Finally, the day to reach the Everest Base Camp is here today. With all the zeal and excitement, we continue on our trekking adventure towards the ultimate destination of the trek. We reach Gorakshep to settle into a teahouse and relish our lunch before heading to the Everest Base Camp also known as the EBC. A gradual ascent through boulder strewn trail eventually takes us to the base of the Mt. Everest. The joy of being at the foot of the highest mountain in the world is simply indescribable. We soak in the moment and enjoy the bliss. We take as many pictures as we want and enjoy and get lost in the joyful moment, amidst high soaring mountains, before we head back to Gorakshep to stay overnight.
This is another day of excitement as we will hike to the highest elevation of the trip. Early morning hike to Kalapatthar vantage point at the elevation of 5,545 meters above sea level takes us to the highest point on the trip. We will be closely right in front of the Himalayan panorama and Mt. Everest like we were never before. The breathtaking view will be even more arresting while the morning sun casts the hues upon those mighty mountains. We hike back to Gorakshep after enjoying the view, sunrise and the joyful moment at the v vantage point. Later, we will trek to Dingboche to stay overnight.
From today, we will trek towards our climbing adventure to Island peak. We will walk to Chhukung village to stay overnight. It is a short day walk that provides us ample time to rest and prepare for the climb. Once we reach Chhukung, we will explore the place. We will also sort out all the gear that we need for the climbing here at this place.
We will trek to the base camp of Island Peak today that will take us along the Lhotse glacial moraine. Although the walk is a short one only of about four hours, we go through beautiful and diverse mountain terrains with beautiful scenic views. We finally reach the Island Peak base camp to spend overnight there.
It is an acclimatization and orientation day at the base camp today. We take the time to prepare ourselves for the climbing adventure for tomorrow. The climbing guide will give us an orientation on the techniques, use of climbing equipment and safety measures. We can also take the day to take a walk in the surroundings of the base camp to acclimatize. Stay overnight at the Island peak base camp.
The big day of the adventure has eventually arrived for us. It is going to a really early start right after the midnight. Imja Tse or Island Peak that had been successfully climbed in 1953 is our goal of the adventure today. The sandy and some grassy trails take us higher up and we emerge to the trail that is filled with huge boulders. Our early morning effort on the mountain is challenging but it is going to be equally rewarding as well. We eventually reach to a snowy ridgeline that leads us to the summit glacier. We have to be really careful on our glacier walk on the mountain as there are several crevasses. We eventually reach the summit with a final climb that requires a bit of technical knowledge of mountain climbing. The view from the top is surreal that captivates us completely. We will spend some beautiful moments at the top of the peak before descending towards the base camp. We trek back to Chhukung today and stay our overnight there.
We will trek back to Phortse village on our return journey. We walk to the destination via Dingboche crossing Imja Khola. Almost 6 hours of trekking journey brings us some incredible views and amazing cultural experience. We will spend a relaxing time and overnight at Phortse village.
Our walk for the days will take us to Namche Bazar today. The trek will traverse the trail through Dudh Koshi River valley and beautiful villages along the trail. We eventually reach Namche Bazar to stay overnight.
We continue of the final day of trekking and head towards Lukla. Meandering mostly on the downhill trail, we follow the Dudh Koshi valley again to reach Lukla. Once we reach Lukla and check into the guest house, we will have time to wander around and take a relaxing moment. A big walking adventure in the mountains has come to end today. Big thanks to the awesome team of porters and guide who tirelessly worked so hard to make sure that things are well taken care of.
We say goodbye to mountains today as we fly back to Kathmandu. A wonderfully peaceful adventure has come to end yet it has left a life lasting impression upon us. With the memory and love for mountains and people there, we fly back to Kathmandu where we will have time to find a soothing relaxing after trek massage or just chill around.
This additional day is to cover any possible delay or cancellation of the flight to Lukla and back which is a usual thing in this flight sector due to weather condition. If this contingency day is not used, it’s a free day in Kathmandu to do some activities or just spend a relaxing day.
We have come the final day of the big Island Peak Climbing adventure and we hope that you enjoyed the adventure. Now, it’s the time to say a departing goodbye for this time with the hope to see you soon for next adventure. We will drive you to airport 3 hours before your flight schedule.
